The seventh season of Rick and Morty was released on HBO Max in 2023. It was a messy season that started off weakly, but ended strongly.

Rick and Morty Season 7 Review

This is the first season where the voices of the protagonists were changed as Justin Roiland was fired from the show after the sexual harassment allegations. I honestly didn’t notice any change, so I have to give props to the new voice actors for doing such a great job. The overall season had an issue with the first half that was overly mediocre and uninspired in its roster of bland episodes, but the second half was genuinely great, so the season made up for that.

How Poopy Got His Poop Back focuses on Mr. Poopybutthole, a character that never appealed to me personally, so this episode ended up being forgettable to me. The Jerrick Trap was actually quite solid as it made good use of its body-swapping premise. It’s also the only Jerry-centric episode in a season that sorely lacked his presence.

Air Force Wong is a fine episode centering on the president character. He’s always a lot of fun, but the storyline itself was too standard. That’s Amorte is a very problematic episode about cannibalism and suicide. I found it too distasteful instead of provocative, though its unabashed originality is to be admired. The episode is memorable for sure, but they just did not have to go into such an unpleasant, nihilist territory. Unmortricken is another one of those annoying episodes focusing on the multiverse, a concept that is particularly tiresome on this show.

Rickfending Your Mort is a pretty good episode with a solid concept, though the overall execution could have been stronger. Wet Kuat Amortican Summer starts this incredible streak of episodes that will continue to the very end of the season with each episode being excellent. This one is a terrific parody of ‘Total Recall’ that is the most SF episode of the bunch, but also the funniest by far. The endless repeating of Morty’s line always cracked me up. It’s an unhinged episode that could have easily come from the minds of Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

Rise of the Numbericons: The Movie has the best world building of the entire season. It is set on this planet of numbers and letters and it follows their ridiculous conflict. There are so many funny puns that were actually not too on-the-nose at all. It’s another chaotic, silly episode in the best way possible with amusing dialogue throughout.

Mort: Ragnarick is a story about Valhalla, Bigfoot and the Pope. Yes, this is another ridiculous episode, but delightfully so. It mixes all of these seemingly disparate threads into a surprisingly coherent, funny whole. The scenes where they attack the Pope and fail every time were the highlights. Fear No Mort is the deepest episode of the season. This is a psychological story that examines the core relationship between Rick and Morty and how co-dependent they are. Rick is very funny in this episode while Morty is at his most vulnerable. The SF concept was beautifully used to explore their dynamic.

Overall, the seventh season of Rick and Morty is a messy one. The first half of its run was quite forgettable and subpar with episodes that nobody will remember in years to come. But the second half saw some truly terrific storylines that were an eclectic mix of outlandishly silly and provocatively deep. There is not a lot of Rick, Jerry and Summer in this season, but Morty got to shine throughout with a couple of excellent arcs.

Worst Episodes: How Poopy Got His Poop Back and Unmortricken.

Best Episodes: Wet Kuat Amortican Summer and Fear No Mort.

My Rating – 4
