Ranking The Purge Films
The Purge is a dystopian movie series that at first was a home invasion horror that quickly turned into pure action. This is the series that benefitted heavily from its strong high concept and excellent action, but it continues to leave most of us wanting more in terms of dialogue, characterization and plot. Without further ado, here is my ranking of all Purge movies.
5. The Forever Purge
The Forever Purge is the fifth entry in the franchise and by now the formula has become quite stale. Yes, the changed setting was refreshing and the action was as well executed as always, but its political themes were treated with in such an unsubtle way with quite mediocre dialogue. It has nothing new to add to the conversation, thus it’s the worst of the franchise.
4. The Purge: Election Year
The Purge: Election Year is the third installment in this series and the most mediocre one yet. It’s nowhere near as political as its title would suggest, but it’s also too familiar and uninspired in its plotting. The franchise here turned into an action thriller territory for the better, but the characterization and dialogue were especially weak in what is the second worst entry yet.
3. The Purge
The first Purge movie did not start off this franchise with a whole lot of promise unfortunately. It established its killer premise well at first and those dystopian thrills were initially quite effective, but eventually the flick discarded these intriguing themes and ideas in favor of a regular home invasion that also failed to properly develop any of its characters.
2. The First Purge
The prequel to the entire franchise, The First Purge is among the best entries due to terrific action set pieces and a brisk pace throughout. It’s an undeniably fun movie that also benefits from solid performances, but the characters remain underwritten and the social commentary is just as unsubtle as ever.
1. The Purge: Anarchy
This was the second entry and the first one to take the action from the house to the streets, elevating the franchise to a more cinematic status. Anarchy is the one Purge movie that feels closest to the formula that the filmmakers clearly always intended to strike. It still has bad dialogue and poor characters, but its strong action and big fun factor made it undeniably the highlight of the entire series.
