Radius Movie Review

Radius is a 2017 Canadian science fiction thriller film directed by Caroline Lebreche and starring Diego Klattenhoff. It’s a flawed, but very intriguing movie.

When he wakes up after a car accident and doesn’t have a memory, a man makes his way into town to look for help. As he heads to town to look for help, he discovers dead bodies that have strange pale eyes. This movie is very intriguing in premise alone, though the execution of said premise is obviously quite uneven.

I was fascinated by its central mystery and I wanted to learn what is behind all of this, but definitely the movie was overly slow in pace and momentum as it needed to have been more eventful. Still, it remained very interesting in its mystery elements, though the thriller elements could have been more pronounced.

The twist ending is fantastic. Albeit overly dark, ridiculously dark to be honest, it still led to that unbelievably intense, very brutal ending. It changed the entire narrative that was going before it by twisting everything on its head. It pulled the rug beneath the viewers in a very successful manner.

What particularly bothered me with Radius is the acting. It’s simply quite mediocre, even for independent genre movie standards. Diego Klattenhoff is particularly problematic as his performance is simply never as strong as this great main role clearly demanded. Charlotte Sullivan is arguably a bit better, but still none of them made a good impression to be honest.

The character development is also just solid without ever reaching greatness. Where Radius excels is in some of its imagery, especially the dead birds, the charcoaled ground etc. The movie is obviously very cheap-looking, but for the most part they managed to utilize its very low budget to the best way possible. The dialogue is pretty good and its theme of the past catching up to you and whether or not you are to be deemed guilty of something bad that you unknowingly committed in the past was fascinating, and I wanted even more examination of that central theme.

Although Radius is very mediocre in its acting performances, cheap, uneven and lacking momentum in some scenes, it’s still a very intriguing in premise science fiction thriller flick with a particularly interesting central theme and a phenomenal twist ending that twisted everything on its head. The movie ended up being incredibly dark, which made it quite memorable.

My Rating – 3.5
