Porky’s Picnic (1939)
Porky’s Picnic Review
Porky’s Picnic is a 1939 animated short film from the Looney Tunes series. It is a pretty solid effort.
Now this film is not great. It is not at all original as we have seen similar stories before and most of the execution is too straightforward and lacking in energy and humor, especially that first half. Plus the animation is not great. I found it overly bland and not polished at all. But other than that, I actually thought this was a fun little film.
So Porky is on a picnic with his girlfriend Petunia but Pinky the baby is there to spoil his fun. Now Pinky can be a nuisance, but I still like the cartoons where Porky is a victim as thus I root for him much more. The second half is particularly entertaining with two very good gags: the ending is a lot of fun and of course that cage sequence is hilarious in typically crazy Looney Tunes fashion.
Porky’s Picnic is nothing new, but at least it does have two quality gags and solid characterization.
