Porky’s Five & Ten (1938)
Porky’s Five & Ten Review
Porky’s Five & Ten is a 1938 animated short film from the Looney Tunes series. It is okay, but nothing too remarkable.
This is unusual. It states Porky in the title and yet he isn’t used all that much in the actual cartoon which is a shame as the film sorely needed him. That fish that is the protagonist here is pretty solid and somewhat memorable, but I wanted more Porky here.
The film is very well animated and I loved the underwater sequences and how well they were established. The music is particularly strong with a couple of fun, catchy songs used throughout. But the action is mostly not terrific, the humor is lacking and once again we see parodies of Greta Garbo and Mae West. They really do need to retire those same old jokes once and for all.
Porky’s Five & Ten is well scored and animated, but it lacks in Porky Pig and is pretty much recycled in its gags.
