Big Chief Ugh-Amugh-Ugh (1938)
Big Chief Ugh-Amugh-Ugh Review
Big Chief Ugh-Amugh-Ugh is a 1938 animated short from Popeye the Sailor series. It is a fun, but lacking entry.
This is the entry that uses Native Americans in its story and of course that’s bound to be controversial. But that does not bother me as this is 1938 we’re talking about. What bothered me was that this entry was too long for such an uninventive and mostly basic story with no inspired moments to be had. And the humor should have been much better.
But what is great here is once again the titular hero who is awesome and so funny. Olive is also pretty good and I liked the fact that Gus Wickie voiced the major villain as he suited the part wonderfully. As for the action, it is mostly standard, but there are two scenes here that take this movie to the next level. One is that scene in which Popeye pretends to be kicking the guy and the other happens in the ending where spinach is used in a pretty original way as the fire opened the can and it flew in Popeye’s mouth.
