Popeye the Sailor Meets Sindbad the Sailor (1936)
Popeye the Sailor Meets Sindbad the Sailor Review
Popeye the Sailor Meets Sindbad the Sailor is a 1936 animated short from Popeye the Sailor series. It is one of the three Popeye cartoons that are done in color and are twice the usual length.
I have to admit that I am not such a big fan of these three color specials in the Popeye filmography. I prefer the shorter, black-and-white shorts much more. Now, this one is definitely good, but it lacks in the comedy department as it is never particularly funny, despite a couple of amusing moments here and there. And I also think that Popeye is better suited for a seven minute running time than a 16 minute one. That is just my opinion.
But there are some aspects here that are quite good and that benefit from longer running time. Those are mostly the world building which is pretty good and the action. The action is excellent and there are many really great fights here. I also liked the various characters on the island and their designs are great. Bluto as Sindbad is excellent, I liked Popeye, Wimpy was funny and the songs were pretty good. The animation in particular is gorgeous with a superb color palette and beautiful landscapes. But I still find it overrated it as it is considered to be one of the finest animated shorts ever when it isn’t even one of the best Popeye shorts.
