Hold the Wire (1936)
Hold the Wire Review
Hold the Wire is a 1936 animated short from Popeye the Sailor series. It is one of the better entries of its time.
Popeye is reading poetry to Olive on the phone, but Bluto cuts the line and insults her in his Popeye impression in order to sabotage him. This scenario is really good and leads to many great moments. I loved Olive in the beginning and there were some very funny moments with her. Also, Popeye and Bluto are great as well and the ending I found to be very memorable and well animated.
The humor could have been better as the short wasn’t as hilarious as it could have been, but Hold the Wire has such a good action that it might be one of the finest shorts in terms of fights in years. The fights near the end are all excellent and the setting is really well utilized with the wire being a typical animated place for the time, but the one that is still satisfying here. All of the characters are superb, the fights are great and it has its funny moments leading to a really good 1936 Popeye entry.
