Mutiny Ain’t Nice (1938)
Mutiny Ain’t Nice Review
Mutiny Ain’t Nice is a 1938 animated short from Popeye the Sailor series. It is a refreshingly different, hilarious short.
It’s been a while since the Popeye series has had a truly unique, different entry which is why this one was a refreshing change in pace to me. Everything here is authentic and different than usual with the strong emphasis on Olive being quite welcome. It isn’t perfect as it wastes those sailors and it could have been a lot funnier having in mind its premise is terrific, but it is mostly great.
Popeye leaves Olive before going to sea because women are bad luck on a ship, but she accidentally ends on it anyway leading to such a hilarious situation. This is great because we finally see his profession on screen as it is pretty odd that the series is called Popeye the Sailor and yet there ain’t that many sailing episodes involved in it. But this is great as Olive is much more action-oriented and funnier than usual and Popeye is again hilarious. And that ending is so funny and a perfect conclusion to this plot.
Mutiny Ain’t Nice is such a different, unique Popeye cartoon with a great use of Olive and such a spectacular premise.
