Pitch Perfect 3 is a 2017 musical comedy film directed by Trish Sie and starring Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson among others. It is another fun installment in the franchise.

The plot here is almost non-existent. They go on their final tour but eventually they only want Beca to sing. I liked how the group wanted her to go out and sing and that was a great message, but it was ruined by still including the group in the end. That was safe and boring.
My main issue with this film is certainly its crime storyline which is not only entirely necessary, but it also felt very lazy and increasingly silly from scene to scene. Even in a comedy genre, I did not buy it and I found it to be both ludicrous and unrealistic.
Let’s talk about the characters. As per usual, this is where the film shines – in their group dynamic. I love their interactions and their wonderful friendship and even though this film did not focus enough on everyone, we at least got a major focus on some main characters which was great.
Beca continues to be very likable and Anna Kendrick is excellent in the role and her singing is beautiful. Naturally Fat Amy once again steals the show and is the highlight of the entire film. Even though the relationship with her father is not great and that whole subplot is weak and not even John Lithgow could save it, at least that led to her badass action scenes which were silly but very entertaining. And once again her one-liners steal the show and I was especially amused by her constant picking on Emily.

But I wanted more from Hailee Steinfeld and although Rebel Wilson is excellent in the role of Fat Amy, she definitely took a lot of screen time from the others which are all mostly forgettable here. Elizabeth Banks and John Michael Higgins are as fun and as hilarious as ever and although not nearly enough present as they deserve, they are still excellent, especially in that incredibly funny post-credits sequence.
Pitch Perfect 3 does deal with some romantic elements, but thankfully only briefly and it was the right choice to show the eventual romantic developments only in the credits and thus the movie was quicker and more focused on the girls themselves. I liked that quite a bit even though Theo and Beca’s potential relationship did not go anywhere.
Musically speaking, the movie is not as memorable as the previous two entries but it is still pretty solid and I loved most of the competitions and songs that they have chosen. The humor is mostly very good, but sometimes it was not particularly strong. The dialogue is typical and the entire script is very cliched and the film almost doesn’t have a plot. But I did like the shorter runtime which led to a much more entertaining and faster paced film.

So in the end, I would say that it is pretty much on par with its two predecessors. Possibly somewhat weaker, but still they are all mostly of the same quality. If I had to rank them, I would say the second one is the best followed by the first one and then the final one. But all are very fun and although just okay films critically speaking, they serve their purpose to entertain.
Pitch Perfect 3 is not much weaker than its predecessors even though its plot is almost non-existent and that entire crime subplot is so silly and unnecessary that not even the presence of John Lithgow could save it. But the group dynamic is still strong and although not all characters and actors get their moment to shine, Anna Kendrick is great and of course Rebel Wilson steals the show in terms of the humor. It is a shorter and thus more brisk and fun film which serves its purpose to entertain.
