Thomas and Bea are now married and living with Peter and his rabbit family. Bored of life in the garden, Peter goes to the big city, where he meets shady characters and ends up creating chaos for the whole family. The first ‘Peter Rabbit’ movie was one of the better and unexpectedly fun Sony animated offerings. I liked it so much that I genuinely wanted a sequel. Now that it is here, it’s not as good as the original, but it came pretty close in another surprising turn of events.

The overall plot, I would say, is weaker this time around. However, the gags are just as good and some are even better, especially in the first half that was the best part of the movie while the second went a bit off the rails with unfortunately forgettable villains. The humor is by far the best reason to see this movie as it’s fun and perfectly solid.

It was also unexpected to find the human characters in a live-action/animated hybrid be this good, but they are here, and actually this is one thing that this sequel does better than its predecessor. They just worked. I loved the subplot about the book publishing and everything that it entailed while both Rose Byrne and Domhnall Gleeson are reliably terrific.

They also operate very well with the cartoon characters and the fact that they now started hearing Peter talking and the movie not making a big fuss about it was different and really refreshing. I just wish that the animal characters were as memorable as only Peter is quite strong with James Corden again killing it in the main role, but others are inferior, though the fox is pretty cool.

Peter Rabbit 2 Movie Review

Peter Rabbit 2 mixes animation and live-action beautifully and quite believably. The British accents once again made the cartoon animals very funny. The action is forgettable and again the villains needed more work, but for the most part the movie is just so much fun that most kids and even adults won’t care about some of its bigger problems. This franchise definitely is one of the best in this hybrid realm, which is not difficult to achieve, but still it’s worth a praise.

Peter Rabbit 2 is a pretty satisfactory sequel to one of Sony Animation’s better movies. The second half is somewhat of a mess while the villains aren’t great themselves, but this is a rare live-action/animated hybrid where the humans are actually not a pain in the ass, and that was thanks in no small part to two charming turns by Rose Byrne and Domhnall Gleeson. The mixing of the two mediums also worked and the humor is pretty solid.

My Rating – 3.5
