Parade of the Wooden Soldiers (1933)
Parade of the Wooden Soldiers Review
Parade of the Wooden Soldiers is a 1933 animated short film from the Betty Boop series. It is a solid, but flawed short.
A toy version of Betty Boop drops in on a small toy shop. The other toys come to life and crown her their queen. This is the most Disneyesque Betty Boop short released up until this point in the series’ run. Thus, it lacked the inventiveness and the risqué freshness of its predecessors.
The animation is fantastic here. The toys truly come to life and their movements were especially elaborate and realistic. The third act is your standard Betty gets chased by an animal narrative, but some of the action was well executed and the movie truly had terrific world building. It’s a shame that the gags were far from great and the storytelling was subpar.
