Overlord Season 3 Review
The third season of Overlord premiered in 2018. It’s another solid season of this show, but an inferior one to its predecessors.

This season continues the trend of moving the action to the supporting players and away from Ainz himself. There are moments with Ainz that are very memorable, but overall this season was devoted to new characters for the most part. And I have to say that none of those characters appealed to me all that much, though their overall development was quite solid.
I really enjoyed the goblin and troll arc. There is a significant Western influence on this series in terms of world building and fantastical mythology and creatures. The battle sequences were too extensive for me personally, but at least they were well executed and fun. The village people were forgettable and uninteresting, but the creatures were entertaining.
But it is the second half of this season where it reached the strength of the previous ones. The highlights were the last two episodes that were full of spectacle and a shock factor in the massacre that Ainz carried out. Yes, I realize how some may be appalled by his actions, which are truly inexcusable, but this idea of a ruthless villain being the center of a story continues to be a unique element that distinguishes this series from many others.
The death of Gazef was unpredictable, but moving. His friends mourning for him and vowing to continue to fight made for a poetic finale. I missed seeing Albedo, Mare and others, but the small moments that they got were all very funny and amusing. The humor continues to shine on this series and so does the dialogue.

A lot of jokes were mined from Ainz being stupid to make a plan for himself with others having to do it for him. The animation is definitely flawed and overly unpolished at times, but nowhere near as bad as many would complain about. The score is not my cup of tea, but the voice acting is excellent and the action scenes are great.
Overall, the third season of Overlord has a weaker first half, but a strong second one. The new characters were forgettable here, but the old ones got some great moments to shine. The final two episodes were so memorable and Ainz becoming a truly ruthless villain was an interesting development. It’s a messy and slow at times, but fun season nonetheless.
Worst Episodes: A Ruler’s Melancholy and Carne Village Once More.
Best Episodes: Massacre and PVP.
