Our Flag Means Death Season 2 Review
The second season of Our Flag Means Death premiered in 2023. It’s a solid, but inferior season to the first one.

We’re joined one another. Intertwined“

This season emphasized on the aspects of this show that I found less interesting the first time around and that is the drama. This show was billed as a comedy, but eventually it turned out to be a dramedy with a focus on drama in this sophomore season. This was a disappointing turn of events for me as the show had great potential to be very funny.
Stede and Ed continue their romance and their love story is the most touching thing on this show. The two are a lovely couple and a believable one in their quarrels and grievances. Taika Waititi gave a more confident performance than the last time and of course Rhys Darby stole the show with the best and most natural acting of the bunch.
Black Pete and Lucius are another fun couple. Spanish Jackie returns and she’s a lot of fun too. Zheng Yi is a new character, but I found her to be quite uninteresting. The same goes for the other newly added characters. They are all forgettable.

The production values are only serviceable, though the acting is excellent. The cinematography, score and costumes are all just okay. This series isn’t known for its technical aspects as the budget for it must have been super low, but still they should have been more artistic in their approach. The irreverent tone was still there, but it was mostly replaced by a moving, dramatic tone. And I did appreciate the emphasis on character development and relationship work, but I wanted more humor nonetheless.
The second season of Our Flag Means Death is at the end of the day a solid one. It lacked humor and the technical aspects are only serviceable, but the character development and relationship work were quite strong. It’s a more dramatic season for better and for worse. This was the last season of this show, which was unfortunate as it could have easily had more seasons under its belt.
Worst Episodes: Impossible Birds and Red Flags.
Best Episodes: Man on Fire and Mermen.
