On with the New (1938)
On with the New Review
On with the New is a 1938 animated short film from the Betty Boop series. It is a pretty weak cartoon.
Frustrated at her job as a a short order cook and dishwasher at a local diner, Betty Boop decides to call it quits and tries her luck at a new automated day care center. This movie dealt with the theme of nursery and how difficult it is to take care of children, and it was especially so during these years. The movie is gorgeously animated and Betty’s plight here made her quite sympathetic.
The problem with this short is that it has no plot to speak of. The same gag is repeated throughout and the humor is thoroughly lacking in this instance. More physical gags and memorable scenarios with the babies should have been included. The score is also quite forgettable.
