Mickey Mouse in Jungle Magic Review

Mickey Mouse in Jungle Magic is a Disney comic that was published in 1947 under the Four Color Comics label (#181). It’s a pretty solid issue.

The first of two stories in this comic is called Mickey Mouse in Jungle Magic and it’s the better of the two stories. The ending is rather anti-climactic, but fun regardless. Mickey and Goofy set out to find a rare flower in South America for a client at a flower shop, but Mickey eventually realizes that he can just paint the flower in the requested color and do the job that easily. This was one of those stories where Mickey’s ingeniously was on full display, which I really appreciated. The illustration work is solid and Goofy is amusing, but it is Mickey who stole the show here.

But Mickey Mouse and the Soap Box Derby did not work for me. I dislike that Mickey is differently designed in these stories with his nephews. He has a distinctly larger head and weird body proportions. This story is charming and cute enough, but it was also too wholesome and lacking in memorable plot points and conflict.

At the end of the day, this issue of Mickey Mouse worked because it had one excellent and memorable story, but the other one was quite inferior.

My Rating – 3.8
