Kronk’s New Groove Movie Review
Kronk’s New Groove is a 2005 direct-to-video animated comedy film from Disneytoon Studios. It’s a solid, but far from great movie.

I actually found this one rather overrated. It counts among the best Disneytoon sequels, but to me, though solid, it was disappointing and never approaching the greatness of the fresh original movie. I did like that it is a sequel and not a midquel, but I really did not like that it was a spin-off. Spin-off movies usually don’t work and this one also rarely justifies giving Kronk all of this emphasis.
I did not care for the storyline, though it does have its sweet moments. Kronk’s relationship with his father is quite well realized and touching and his romance with Miss Birdwell is also excellent. She is such a fun character and the two share a wonderful dynamic. The scenes between the two are among the best ones here.
However, I disliked all of the scenes with the kids. They rendered this movie utterly childish and dull. It’s like most movies made by this studio – they gave us tiresome kiddie drama instead of a truly strong, new storyline that honors the original, and it was unfortunate to witness.
I was disappointed that all of the characters from the original were not fully present here. With that being said, all got their moments to appear and shine with Kuzco’s moments being particularly fun and hilarious. Pacha is also well used and Yzma was per usual highly entertaining in her cartoony villainy. It was also hilarious how quickly she was disposed of, and that decision made the movie quite intriguing and unexpected.

But Kronk’s New Groove showcases that these main characters are so great that a movie without them doesn’t quite work. The dialogue and humor are good here, but far from amazing as the original was. The animation was pretty solid, but nothing special. As for its soundtrack, I liked it quite a bit. It led to a very energetic, groovy feeling that the movie would otherwise lack.
