I don’t have any idea of who or what God is.

But I do believe in some great spiritual power.

I feel it particularly when I’m out in nature

It’s just something that’s bigger and stronger

than what I am or what anybody is.

I feel it. And it’s enough for me

Documentaries are best seen if you are interested in said subject matter and person and that certainly is the case with this particular film. I am simply fascinated by chimpanzees and animals in general and I love and admire Jane Goodall so much. She’s not only a deeply inspirational person in the field of primatology and even in feminism, but she’s also simply a wonderful, smart and eloquent woman who has a lot to say.

And definitely the interviews are terrific in this film. She basically talks throughout the entire film herself which is an interesting, but flawed choice as I would have liked to have heard someone close to her as well. But she is so fascinating to listen to that I didn’t mind that all too much.

Her quote about religion is the most inspiring one as I most definitely agree with her assessment. I too feel a difficult to comprehend and describe, but definite spiritual sense when I’m in nature and thus I fully connected to her quote.

Another fascinating discussion in this film is the one where she states how chimpanzees are not only violent because they are so incredibly smart, but that may also explain their connection to us humans. The two of our species are cousins and her theory that we may have inherited their violent and darker side is a very difficult  to grasp, but interesting and maybe even truthful theory.

Jane also explores who Jane Goodall really is as a person and I loved her relationship with her kid as well as chimpanzees and nature. The film is phenomenally filmed with stunning natural photography as it’s so gorgeously shot in its every frame. The score is also fantastic and although super imposing, it’s undeniably one of the best film scores of the entire year. So the film has its small flaws, but is overall the best documentary of 2017 after Turkish ‘Kedi’.

Jane is a great documentary that is fascinating in its subject matter and person as Jane Goodall is a deeply inspirational, smart and wonderful woman who provides some very interesting thoughts in this film. It gives as an insight into her persona as well as her lifelong career while consistently being gorgeously shot and superbly scored.

My Rating – 4.5
