Jack-Wabbit and the Beanstalk (1943)
Jack-Wabbit and the Beanstalk Review
Jack-Wabbit and the Beanstalk is a 1943 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a very good short.
This entry is a parody of the Jack and the Beanstalk tale where Jack is replaced by our favorite bunny Bugs. The short isn’t perfect as it needed a brisker pace and the gags could have been funnier. I also found it rather uneventful in the bigger scope of things. However, the short is still highly amusing with many memorable plot points such as the scenes in the hair, in the ear and especially the glass-cutting trick employed by Bugs.
The giant himself is your typical dim-witted, but endearing giant. Bugs Bunny is terrific though. He’s rather funny and very competent and smart, but also quite vulnerable in certain scenes which was quite interesting to witness. I also loved the animation here, especially of the giant’s close-up head. That was phenomenal. The movie is rather inventive in those scenes and the dialogue is great as well.
Jack-Wabbit and the Beanstalk is such an amusing, very well executed, atmospheric short which isn’t perfect, but it’s beautifully animated and even inventive in some sequences.
