Isn’t It Romantic Movie Review
Isn’t It Romantic is a 2019 romantic comedy film directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson and starring Rebel Wilson, Adam DeVine and Liam Hemsworth. It’s a refreshing genre flick.

“Yeah, New York smells like shit again!“

Rebel Wilson plays a cynical woman who is a hater of romantic comedies, but when she hits her head, she finds herself in an alternate universe which entirely plays by the annoying romantic comedy rules where she has her gay sidekick, everyone is nice and finds her hot and NYC looks and smells great. And it is up to her to end up with the guy who has always been infatuated with her.
I loved watching this movie as it’s simply hugely entertaining and also hilarious. Its killer script is very authentic and perfect for those who dislike the genre such as myself while also strong for those who like it as the movie isn’t just disparaging, but also embracing the genre which was a great mix.
They just knew how to perfectly satirize the entire romantic comedy conventions and I loved the sexy guy and his goofy one-liners as well as a sassy gay friend and particularly the flowers and the city and how everything is perfect and everyone is nice. The female rivalry in employment was also hilariously spoofed and the film is very much anti-stereotypical in its real portrayal of women and gay people.

Rebel Wilson is awesome. I have always been a big fan of hers and here she excelled and delivered her career-best performance so far. She perfectly fits this role and was so well cast. I loved her cynicism and she’s genuinely hilarious throughout the majority of runtime and although the movie has many actors and characters, she’s the one who shines as its very charismatic, lovable lead.
But I have to say that I really liked Adam DeVine as Josh. He’s always indescribably sweet and endearing in his own weird nerdy way and the same goes for Josh here. He’s extremely likable and I just rooted for the two to end up together given how perfect they are for each other. I loved their interactions and their romance was so lovely.
Priyanka Chopra is okay in the role, but the character is rather forgettable. But Liam Hemsworth is surprisingly charismatic and funny and he was also very well cast. As for Brandon Scott Jones, he’s good as both a stereotypical and normal gay neighbor and I loved that duality at play here.
Isn’t It Romantic also is rather romantic in some of its scenes and it also has a great message about the importance of loving yourself first and respecting yourself and the protagonist’s journey toward self-esteem is wonderfully conveyed here.

The movie is very cheesy in its musical numbers, but also fun. I did dislike its big, epic ending which was really overly cliched and dull and I also found the movie, just like ‘Deadpool’ itself, too much embracing the romantic comedy trappings as much as it’s parodying them. I definitely wanted a more inspired conclusion. But still, the dialogue is excellent, the script is superb and everything besides that third act is so good and hilarious. I also found the movie gorgeously shot and conveying its fantastical elements superbly.
Isn’t It Romantic becomes the romantic comedy it parodies in its over-the-top, annoying ending, but still it’s hugely refreshing and a lot of fun in its killer script which makes fun of various stupid rom com conventions through a lot of funny stereotypes and hilarious lines of dialogue. Adam DeVine is very likable and a perfect fit for Rebel Wilson who excelled in the main role in a very funny, endearing and charismatic turn. It’s such a fun flick.
