I Lost My Body Movie Review

I Lost My Body is a 2019 French film directed by Jeremy Clapin. It’s a very weird film difficult to classify, but definitely very interesting of an experiment.

It is a romance about a young man named Naofel who falls in love with a woman named Gabrielle. Meanwhile, a disembodied hand goes on a journey to find its body. In the end, these two storylines merge into one as expected, but the merging itself was a bit disappointing. The entire third act could have been better as the build-up was so good that the end result was rushed and not as interesting as the rest of the film.

But I really liked both of these storylines. The romance is very well done and certainly very serious, cinematic even and quite memorable. The scene where the two talk via intercom is by far my favorite moment in the movie as it’s so rich in characterization, dialogue and also emotion. It’s also intriguingly plotted and simply so different that it ended up being authentic.

As for the other subplot, it’s weird for sure. It might be too weird to get accustomed to at first, but I did get used to it eventually, and I ended up really enjoying it. Not a lot is explained when it comes to these fantasy elements, but simply following this hand on a dangerous, at times even gruesome adventure was very well done, meticulously detailed and interestingly dark and macabre.

The voice acting in I Lost My Body is excellent across the board, both of these characters are quite well developed and their relationship is very interesting. I would also say that the animation is fantastic. The film is quite cinematic, the details are rich, the colors are excellent and all of its places are very well utilized into the plot.

The score’s also pretty good, and the direction is good as well. But the runtime is very short for such a rich story, and overall the film felt rushed, unfinished and simply not ending on that high of a note. It’s very good, but it could have been even better.

I Lost My Body did not end on a high note and it is rushed, but both of its storylines really work for the most part. The romance is very well realized with some quite powerful scenes while the macabre hand storyline is suitably dark and meticulously detailed. The movie looks good, it has some solid dialogue and it’s particularly authentic in plot and atmosphere.

My Rating – 4
