Hilda and the Mountain King Review

Continuing from the cliffhanger of the second season’s finale, Hilda has found herself stranded in troll country with the body of a troll. She goes on a quest to change back into her human form and reunite with her mum. This is a wonderful movie that serves one of the best stories in the Hilda canon. It’s as adventurous and as human as you’d expect from this lovely series.

The film is all about the complexities of human behavior and how ignorance is the true evil and not any other group, animal or humanoid. The movie paints both trolls and humans in a complex manner, showcasing that each group has their different individuals that all stand differently on a morality spectrum. It’s a great message of acceptance and understanding to preach to children, though it is familiar and simple enough.

Hilda is excellent here. She got a very moving arc and I loved that troll that accompanied her inside a cave. Their conversations were the deepest parts of this flick. I found the villain human character typical, but others fared better, though I would have liked to have seen more from David and Frida in this movie.

Gorgeously animated, the movie benefits from a well utilized troll land and cave setting. The world building continues to shine in this franchise whereas the score, dialogue and voice acting are all stellar. It’s not the best story out there, but it does belong among the best episodes of the show.

Hilda and the Mountain King is a wonderful Hilda movie that is simple in its narrative, but so well painted in its characters, gorgeously visualized and featuring stellar world building, dialogue and voice acting. It has a great message for children and it features a strong arc for Hilda herself.

My Rating – 4.5
