Herr Meets Hare (1945)
Herr Meets Hare Review
Herr Meets Hare is a 1945 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a somewhat disappointing entry.
This is the penultimate WWII entry before the end of the war and I personally find it shocking that it’s forbidden on television today for it makes fun of Nazis. As for the quality of the cartoon itself, it’s rather solid, but unfortunately the ending didn’t do it for me. That Stalin joke was just not as good of a pay-off as the build-up demanded. I also found the structure of the film quite flawed.
However, there is no denying that those scenes with that German fatso and Bugs Bunny were so good, all of them. The eagle was unnecessary himself, but the fatso is quite amusing and Bugs making fun of him and playing Hitler was so well executed. And his faux German is always funny to me. The operatic part of the picture also worked really well.
Herr Meets Hare is disappointing in its ending and pace, but so strong in the interactions between the two characters with some good humor there.
