Harley Quinn Season 2 Review

The second season of Harley Quinn is a bit of an improvement over the original. It has its flaws, but overall this is where the story is really getting interesting.

Harley Quinn Season 2 Review

Finally, after a season and a half Harley and Ivy are officially a couple. This season is all about their complicated relationship. They continue to have sex, but Ivy is still with Kite Man. This triangle worked because it wasn’t overly drawn out and I actually liked how they dealt with Kite Man. He wasn’t a victim, but these two simply could never work out, and it was nice to see that he finally could realize that. He’s gone through a lot of evolution and he still is so much fun.

But back to these two. This is probably the first big lesbian relationship on an animated show, and it works because it’s incredibly well written. Their chemistry is evidently strong and the two have so much fun together. Harley in this season is much less interesting without Ivy and the same goes both ways. Now when they are finally together, I do expect them to work together in a loving tandem in future seasons.

Doctor Psycho goes full villain in this season, which was an okay development, but it should have been better executed. Clayface and King Shark are once again so much fun, especially in the team dynamic. The same goes for Bane, Batman and of course the Joker who genuinely made me laugh out loud a couple of times. The scene with Batman where his identity is revealed was truly hilarious.

My main issue with this season is definitely that entire subplot with Gordon and Batgirl. I did not care for these two whatsoever. They had their good moments, but overall they felt like a detour in a season that did not need them. The pacing is totally off throughout while the mid parts were particularly lacking in excitement. The final couple of episodes were the highlights for sure and the final scene was amazing. The action and humor are once again terrific.

The second season of Harley Quinn is more of the same. It has its pacing and story issues, but the second half of it is superb. The central lesbian relationship is fantastic and the characterization continues to be its best aspect.

Worst Episodes: New Gotham and There’s No Place to Go But Down.

Best Episodes: All the Best Inmates Have Daddy Issues and Dye Hard.

My Rating – 4
