Happy You and Marry Me (1936)
Happy You and Marry Me Review
Happy You and Marry Me is a 1936 animated short film from the Betty Boop series. It is a very trippy short.
A stray kitten wanders into Betty Boop’s house, gets sick on candy, and is cured with catnip by Betty and Pudgy the pup. This movie is all about cats’ obsession with catnip. This could be seen in many cartoons of the time, but here it led to a particularly trippy, drug-induced short that was crazy in its imagery.
Seeing these cats be all high on catnip was quite funny. The animation was excellent throughout, though the score is far from memorable. There is a distinct lack of Betty herself in this movie and even Pudgy is a bit sidelined. The storyline is also as thin as you can get. But just seeing these cats have so much fun while high made for such an amusing cartoon.
Happy You and Marry Me has a thin plot, but very memorable imagery with cats high on catnip. It’s a slim, but funny short.
My Rating – 3.5
