Godzilla vs. Kong Movie Review

Godzilla vs. Kong is a 2021 monster film directed by Adam Wingard and starring Alexander Skarsgard among others. It’s a weakly scripted, but fun blockbuster.

This is the culmination of the MonsterVerse so far, pitting these two iconic monsters against each other. How do we get to that conflict? Well, we do that through a series of terribly written dialogue, illogical character motivations and some very puzzling mythology and world building. There are humans with their own monster allegiances while there is all this talk of only one monster being destined to rule.

Needless to say, it all felt ludicrous. I do praise the team for at least trying to do something and they were even ambitious in terms of storytelling, trying to rival the MCU in the interconnected nature of it all, but unfortunately the end result proved to be too silly and muddled to make an impact.

Again the humans are rushed in their development, though probably an improvement over most of the previous entries in this universe. Skarsgard is quite forgettable  in an underwritten role, Millie Bobby Brown is solid herself and Rebecca Hall is interesting, but most of these people could have easily been cut from the movie and not much would be lost.

Godzilla vs. Kong is very entertaining in its action sequences that are much better executed than those messy scenes in ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’. There is still too much emphasis on water for my liking with the underwater fighting scenes being ludicrous, but the land fights are excellent and the movie was a true spectacle when it comes to the action set pieces.

I prefer Kong myself, so I rooted for him, but obviously the two would unite to fight a bigger baddie in the second half, who turned out to be Mechagodzilla in a menacing, memorable turn. I really liked the weaponry and the mythology of this movie with the special effects being truly outstanding. Some of the superheroic and fantastical scenes were undeniably super cool, and I wish that the rest of the movie reached those heights.

While the humans are reliably forgettable, the titular monsters in Godzilla vs. Kong are excellent. The script is mostly terrible how ludicrous it is, but at least the action is great and the VFX are outstanding. Some of the mythology and world building is also quite strong. It’s a pretty dumb movie, but definitely a solid source of entertainment for anybody who is into this sort of blockbuster filmmaking.

My Rating – 3
