Dopey Dick the Pink Whaler is a 1957 animated short film from the Woody Woodpecker series. It is a pretty forgettable western short.

Woody Woodpecker is on a whaler-ship searching for the titular creature. When sighted, the ship captain sends Woody out in a rowboat to capture Dopey. The whale wrecks the ship but takes a liking to Woody. Needless to say, this is a very strange outing for this series, one that felt more like an adventure than a comedy. It needed more laughs for sure.

With that being said, it was solid for what it is, which is this endearing adventure tale about a whale and Woody befriending each other. That final sequence was so charming. I wanted the ship captain to be more memorable, but Woody is reliably fun here and I found the animation to be stellar. The ship setting is well utilized for action, though not for humor.

Dopey Dick the Pink Whaler is a very well animated and endearing cartoon, but one that is more an adventure than a comedy flick.
