Doodle Jump Review

Doodle Jump is a 2009 platform video game by Lima Sky and for Android devices among others. It’s one of the better and more enjoyable games to play on the phone.

This is the king of game which moves upwards as you control this crazy creature jumping from platform to platform. Along the way, you encounter monsters which you can jump onto and kill or just evade, and also some other obstacles such as black holes that suck you in and kill you in an instant. There are also boosters that can make your jumps much bigger when taken.

So it’s obviously a very easy, less demanding game, but that is where its appeal lies. It’s the type of game which you can just open in an instant and play for however long you want without any bigger expectations. Well, there are leaderboards in it, but those are meant just for yourself (or anyone else using your phone) to compare your best results.

That is the best part to it in my opinion. Competing with yourself and setting yourself new records to beat was a simple, but genius concept that really works. It always gave me chills, that sensation of beating an already very high record of mine.

But Doodle Jump definitely needed more variety. Yes, it has many different fields to play in and modes, but I would still have liked more, and especially for more variety within them. The same goes for the difficulty level as the Space mode itself was by far the easiest to play owing to so many great boosters. Rainforest was difficult for me, and the most visually appealing modes are Ninja, Underwater and Pirate.

Speaking of visuals, Doodle Jump is a simple game, but its charm is always present owing to this endearing protagonist who is so authentically designed and thus instantly memorable. The monsters are much more forgettable though. I also loved the sound, and overall the game was technically simple, but serviceable. I only wanted more variety to the level designs, but overall the difficulty level was terrific and it gets pretty hard while you move along smoothly so.

Doodle Jump is one of the better Android games thanks to an endearing protagonist, a great simple concept to it and its huge replay value. It needed a bit more variety, but still it is the kind of game that is a great play whenever and for however long you need it. And it aged so well.

My Rating – 4.1
