Don Donald (1937)
Don Donald Review
Don Donald is a 1937 Mickey Mouse cartoon. It is a pretty funny flick.
This is basically the first ever Donald Duck cartoon billed as a Mickey Mouse one and I don’t mind as I love the character. He entirely deserved his own series which he proved in this first film. Set in Mexico, it follows his relationship with Donna, how he tries to impress her with the car until it breaks down and she leaves him. Although pretty mean in the tone and the second half is clearly better, I loved the whole cartoon because it features excellent humor and a great ending.
Donna is overly mean, but still very memorable and amusing. Donald is hilarious here and very endearing with his usual fast talk and annoyed expressions. I liked the donkey too and the car is quite charming. The film is set in Mexico and the country is portrayed stereotypically, but in a positive sense with a lot of dancing, singing and their culture emphasized throughout. The score is fittingly Latin and the animation is fantastic.
Don Donald is mean, but pretty funny in its situations with excellent Donald and a very well utilized setting.
