Dog Gone South (1950)
Dog Gone South Review
Dog Gone South is a 1950 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is such a funny flick.
Charlie Dog is back with his manipulative ways. He wants to get in the house with one old man, but he already has a pet bulldog who is jealous. Charlie tries to get rid of the dog, but fails and actually ends up being thrown out by the bulldog in disguise. That finale was absolutely hilarious and the best part of this movie. I loved its gag and the fact that Charlie lost was an unexpected twist.
The first half again isn’t all that memorable of a set-up as it needed more gags and I wanted more from the man himself, but that bulldog is actually quite competent and smart himself and of course Charlie is reliably entertaining. I loved the action and humor here whereas the animation is also quite solid.
Dog Gone South is an underrated Merry Melody with terrific action and some great gags. The ending is fantastic.
