Difficult People Season 3 Review
The third season of Difficult People is another strong one. It is really unfortunate that this wonderful show was cancelled after three seasons.

“I am done with “yes and ing”.
I’m more of a “no but” girl.
Well, not a “no butt” girl.
More like a flat-butt girl. Flat and wide“

Passover Bump is a pretty solid opening episode and although Billy was too cruelly punished here, Julie’s subplot is excellent as her family interactions are always terrific. Strike Rat again has a weaker Billy storyline, but Julie being cast in a Woody Allen show and protesting against him all at the same time was absolutely hilarious and so Julie. And Matthew having sex with Vanessa Williams is even funnier in its silliness.
Code Change once again has a weaker Billy storyline and that surely is a pattern throughout this season, but Julie and Arthur’s sex problems are very well executed and so amusing. Rabbitversary is one of the weaker episodes here but Lucy Liu is memorable and of course the episode is important for introducing Billy’s new boyfriend played by John Cho. I really liked him in this season and their relationship was very well written.
Cindarestylox is naturally hilarious as seeing Julie freeze her face with a Botox treatment and realize that smiling can help you a lot in life was so funny. These two are absolutely clueless about positivity and that’s always fun to witness.

Bernie and Blythe is about four different things and is thus all over the place but the highlight is actually Billy here as it was so well explored how he would not fit with the wives at the table in his boyfriend’s workplace. Very truthful in character.
Fuzz Buddies is nothing to write home about as it is again too scattershot in both humor and subplots. Criminal Minds has pretty solid Julie as well as Billy storylines, but Marilyn and Matthew actually steal the show here as their newfound partnership is hilarious and it ends in such a funny scene with him impersonating her in drag.
Sweet Tea is hilarious! It is one of those drug-fueled episodes that apparently every comedy show these days must produce but at least this one’s terrific. Lola is great and she has been excellent throughout this season and seeing all of the crew get high was not only funny, but also perfectly realized in their detailed, truthful to character and observant dreams.

The Silkwood is definitely long and messy, but phenomenal nonetheless. It is a great conclusion to unfortunately the entire show and although somewhat rushed, it definitely gave us closure to all of the characters. The highlight was seeing how the two met and it was such a wonderful sequence. They may be terrible and deeply unhappy people, but at least they have each other and their friendship is truly great.
In the end, the third and unfortunately final season of Difficult People is another very good one with a terrific emphasis on its two protagonists, solid humor, great celebrity and movie jokes and a fantastic conclusion. It’s ridiculous that more people did not watch it, but it does have somewhat of a limited appeal.
Worst Episodes: Rabbitversary and Fuzz Buddies.
Best Episodes: Sweet Tea and The Silkwood.
