Demon Slayer Season 4 Review

The fourth season of Demon Slayer premiered in 2024 and it consisted of 8 episodes. It is by far the worst season of this anime show.

This season did not get the best reviews from critics, but fans reunited to defend it at all costs. I side with the critics on this one as this is clearly a filler season. This season tackles the Hashira Training Arc, but it does it in such a way that made it very frustrating and boring to watch.

Demon Slayer Season 4 Review

I am all for slice of life storytelling and a calm before the storm season, but this one did not work due to not developing any of its side characters properly. Even Tanjiro himself was quite forgettable this time around and his arc was not exciting at all. Zenitsu and Inosuke are almost entirely forgotten, which was a shame as I love those two. But how they dismissed Nezuko was the worst offender. She was supposed to be a crucial character and now she is just an afterthought.

None of the Hashira get any interesting development and those that get some sort of arc get them through overwhelming flashbacks. The storytelling on this season is immensely lazy, resembling a never-ending montage at times. Why would anyone defend basically a filler season with terrible pacing and almost no plot whatsoever is beyond me. There are even moments where Tanjiro engaged in throwing paper airplanes and an eating contest. This is the type of padding that we witness here.

Demon Slayer has always benefitted from strong animation and score. The visuals here are as dazzling as ever and the new opening theme is stellar. There is also that epic finale that was truly incredible in every way. Muzan arrives to the Hashira village and not only was his arrival super cool, but how they trapped him and almost killed him off was brilliant. The eventual revelation that he is the one who trapped all of them in his own world was fantastic and it made for an incredible hook for the next season.

So yes, the fourth season of Demon Slayer truly did end with a bang. That finale was absolutely incredible and a spectacle of action and excitement. But getting there was a daunting task as the season is pretty much composed of uninteresting, silly filler episodes with no strong character development or pacing. It’s a shame that this one and the third season so negatively impacted what otherwise could have been a terrific shonen series.

Worst Episode: To Defeat Muzan Kibutsuji.

Best Episode: The Hashira Unite.

My Rating – 3.5
