Deadpool 2 Movie Review
Deadpool 2 is a 2018 superhero film directed by David Leitch and starring Ryan Reynolds. It’s such a stupendous sequel that never disappointed me.

In this sequel, Deadpool teams up with some other mutants, forms the X-Force team, and tries to help a mutant kid after whom time traveling soldier from the future is after. In terms of the plot itself, it isn’t obviously entirely original as we’ve seen time travel before in the X-Men franchise alone, but it’s miles above the first entry as it is so much more engaging, better crafted and more interesting. We are finally past the boring origin story so now thankfully we can focus on some fun, new adventures.
So the movie is well written and I really liked the time travel elements, even though the third act was too convenient which was to be expected from a superhero flick. I also really liked the film’s metaphor of Russell’s abuse that he faced in an institution which obviously stood for conversion therapy for gay people. That was very well done. And even though the first movie is much more emotional and obviously more romantic, this one also has moving moments and an emphasis on family and Deadpool’s growing heart is quite welcome.

Wade Wilson continues to be an excellent, truly inspired character and Ryan Reynolds plays him so well that he literally becomes Deadpool. He has excellent comedic timing, most of his jokes really worked and he’s just a lot of fun while also having a big heart. Cable is very good, but again as was the case with Ghost in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’, he starts as a full-on villain, but unfortunately becomes a fully good guy near the end. But still he is competent, memorable with a cool look and his action sequences are the best in the film. Josh Brolin is so good in the role and he truly had a great year in 2018, playing both Cable and Thanos in ‘Infinity War’.
Vanessa died literally at the beginning so she was unfortunately underused here. But her tragic death led to a lot of moving moments and growth in the protagonist. Russell is a great kid, it is interesting seeing for once a fat superhero and of course Julian Dennison of ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’ fame gave another terrific, nuanced performance.
Domino is somewhat underutilized, but her power of luck is very interesting leading to a lot of funny, yet cool action sequences. Juggernaut is a fun, cartoony villain and I just loved the original X-Force and how they were all killed in the film’s most inspired, original scene. The lesbian couple is cute here and of course Deadpool’s constant funny sexual interactions with Colossus (who’s great here) are a lot of fun and some of the best humor in a film which is much more progressive than it’s being reported. It deserves much more praise for that.

Deadpool 2 is well shot and better looking than the first ‘Deadpool’ while also being better written in its story and having much better action sequences which are at times overwhelming, but certainly exhilarating in quality. The first movie was much more emotional though and funnier, but I still found the emphasis on meta jokes and references fabulous here. Some of the Marvel jokes really cracked me up. The humor surely is very good here, though not as brutal as the film is much softer in its R-rating this time around. The soundtrack is overwhelming and loud, but the pacing is mostly quite good.
Deadpool 2 is much less romantic and emotional than the first film, but also much better written with a stronger storyline and terrific, though a bit overwhelming, action. The main character is great as is the newly assembled X-Force with many memorable new additions including Cable. The humor continues to be amazing with Marvel references being particularly amusing. It’s such a hugely entertaining, hilarious film which is one of the rare examples of a sequel which is neither inferior nor better, but literally of the same quality as the original.
