Dark Season 2 Review
The second season of Dark is another amazing season of this incredible show. This is where the plot really thickens and where even more craziness ensues.

While the first season was very much a build-up, this second season of Dark is where the plot begins in earnest. I love both seasons for what they are, but this one is certainly a bit more engaging and at times even wildly entertaining. By now most characters know what is going on, and thus it was fascinating seeing everybody’s reactions at the time travel conspiracy. Even more interesting was seeing multiple people time travelling and trying to change the future, leading to a very complicated, elaborate story.
Jonas has become by this point the focal point of the show as the protagonist. I have no qualms about it as he is very well developed, especially in his adult form. The scenes between the adult version and Hannah are wonderfully realized and quite moving while Adam of course is incredibly menacing. You see, Adam is a very old version of Jonas in the future with a burnt face and very eerie voice. He is by the end of the season revealed to be the main villain who is even above the Priest himself. That revelation was quite iconic and he is such a cool presence here.
I loved everything that they did with Michael here, who this time got much more development than before. You see his struggle with knowing about his younger self existing in Winden, and that twist where it is Jonas who proposed to him the idea of suicide was very powerful and unexpected, but making perfect sense in the context of the story.

Ulrich has become a total madman in this season and his story truly is very tragic with Hannah becoming a full-on villain in her treatment of him. Katharina is also unhinged and it was very interesting seeing her reactions at all the revelations. Elisabeth is a very important person in the post-apocalyptic future part of the season, but overall this timeline was a bit rushed. It was definitely fascinating and gorgeously shot with an amazing atmosphere, but I wanted more time being spent there personally.
Aleksander and Regina got quite a lot to do here and the examination of him by the new police officer was well executed. But Claudia and Egon are by far the best realized characters of this season, the ones that got the best arcs and whose stories are touching and unnerving. Him grappling with everything that is going on in the town was touching to witness, but his death came as a shock to me as it was unexpected and quite heartbreaking. Claudia is a complicated character who definitely is important in the bigger scope of things, but she made some terrible mistakes, making her flawed and very complex. I can’t wait to see what she does next.
Dark is again a bit too soapy in the love triangles and all the affairs going on with too much emphasis put into those trivial subplots, but other than that, the core SF storyline was incredibly well written and the show benefits from sparsely used, but gorgeous VFX and some stunning imagery at display. The time machines are so intriguing and the fact that so many people have used it now also made the show super exciting and pleasantly complex. The score continues to be absolutely incredible in its eeriness while the opening is one of the deepest and most memorable in recent TV history.

The second season of Dark is another masterful season of SF television with incredible acting and characterization per usual, but an increased level of suspense and science fiction elements. The storyline is still very complicated, but positively so, and its twists and reveals are all very exciting.
