Come True Movie Review

Come True is a 2021 Canadian science fiction horror film directed by Anthony Scott Burns and starring Julia Sarah Stone. It’s a movie that had a lot of potential, but ended up being weak.

A teenage runaway takes part in a sleep study that becomes a nightmarish descent into the depths of her mind and a frightening examination of the power of dreams. As a guy who quite often has nightmares and night terrors, which are much worse, I was looking forward to seeing this movie that is all about the darkest corners of dreams and how scary they can be for us.

Thus, I was quite disappointed when I got to see this mess of a movie in its final problematic form. The central performance from Julia Sarah Stone is actually quite good and her arc is the best in the movie, but others are so inferior as characters and also as actors that I never once cared for them. The fact that the third act focused so heavily on a boring male character rendered this part rather lifeless.

Come True does one thing extremely well and that is the visuals. For a film that was immensely cheap in budget, the end result looks very satisfactory and even quite cinematic. There is some very eerie imagery to be had in the dream sequences with the use of the color black and the great sound design being particularly superb.

But the movie never quite made use of its excellent SF horror premise as it was never truly scary nor did it end on a particularly strong note with the third act being an utter mess in every regard. The direction from Anthony Scott Burns is weak and the utter lack of dialogue really bothered me for such a SF-heavy flick.

Come True looks excellent for its small budget. Some of the imagery is quite eerie and the sound is effective at conveying atmosphere. The SF horror premise is terrific, but the execution was unfortunately quite weak. The characterization is inferior, the lack of dialogue is problematic and the movie’s direction and third act are especially mediocre.

My Rating – 3
