Cinderella (1899)
Cinderella Review
Cinderella is an 1899 silent short film directed by George Melies. It is such a problematic, but still respectable outing.
My main problem with this movie is that it’s simply too rushed for the story of Cinderella. Yes, most movies lasted for around six minutes during this period in film history, but then the editing should have been different, and here it’s not only super-fast, but they adapted the whole story instead of focusing on just a couple of key scenes, and that would have been a much better choice.
But I still really appreciated this Cinderella despite those aforementioned flaws. One thing I loved about it is its cinematography with the use of color in an early scene being gorgeous, and the theatrical feel to it is being rather fitting for its period and actually quite charming. I also really liked the sets and the costumes. Everything here looks so wonderful.
Cinderella is incredibly rushed in pace and structure, but the cinematography and costumes are splendid nonetheless.
