Betty Boop’s May Party (1933)
Betty Boop’s May Party Review
Betty Boop’s May Party is a 1933 animated short film from the Betty Boop series. It is a very odd short.
Betty and Bimbo, as Queen and King of the May, host a giant outdoor party that gets sprayed with rubber. The ending to this short was very unique and memorable. Everything turned into rubber, even the aquatic surfaces, which resulted in a lot of weird imagery during that section.
The entire flick is crazy and manic as most Betty Boop shorts from this period are, but it even might be weirder than the rest due to the consistent sense that everything in this party operates with its own logic or lack thereof. The physics-bending gags in the beginning were my favorites. However, the middle section of the film contained imagery that was far less memorable than the previous and later stretches, resulting in an uneven short. The animation is as lovely as always and the soundtrack is electric, but the movie relied too much on its swingy jazz music to take it to the finish line.
