Betty Boop’s Ker-Choo (1933)
Betty Boop’s Ker-Choo Review
Betty Boop’s Ker-Choo is a 1933 animated short film from the Betty Boop series. It is a terrific cartoon.
Betty, Koko and Bimbo drive at the auto races. Betty has a cold, and her sneezes help her win. This short is flawed in that the song that Betty sings about being sick takes up too much of the short’s runtime. It’s fine and charming as always, but it did put the movie to a halt pacing-wise. But other than that, I loved this flick and I find it to be quite underrated. Betty is in a driver’s suit, which made her look different and unique. And she’s just endearing here.
The highlight of the short is the cartoon logic employed in the second half. The race itself was perfectly constructed and made up of hilarious gags that center on that lack of logic in cartoons. The cars change shape and bend at will while Betty herself wins after sneezing at the other racers. That ending was especially silly and funny. The animation is very inventive here and the emphasis on different side characters and their roles in the race or as spectators was great.
