Best and Worst Films from October 2018
Best Films from October 2018:
3. Whitney
October was a pretty good month for me and Christopher Robin almost made the list here, but eventually Whitney ended up taking the third spot. This is a wonderful, heartbreaking documentary that has the power to make you cry how tragic it is. It’s an essential look into the troublesome life of one of the best singers of all time through a series of touching interviews and great, inspirational footage.
2. First Man
First Man almost ended up taking the first spot how superb it truly is. It’s one of the best biopics as well as space movies in recent memory. The performance from Claire Foy is particularly strong and Damien Chazelle here has another terrific film in what is shaping up to be an amazing filmography. The audio-visuals are certainly worthy of praise, but it is the intimate look into Armstrong and his life that is especially important as is the movie’s groundbreaking stripping away of American patriotic bullshit that plagued so many previous films.
1. Strawberry and Chocolate
And this Cuban gay film takes the first spot mostly because of its unexpected nature. I went into the movie expecting one thing and I got something completely different. Rare are movies that surprise me and this is certainly one such film. Its sophisticated, interesting script is great, but so is the central acting performance and its well grounded political outlook of its country. It’s a wonderful, immensely touching movie in its many scenes and I loved its very smart, playful dialogue as well.
Worst Films from October 2018:
3. Halloween II
Halloween II certainly has a couple of very creepy sequences and it’s never really bad and better than I expected for sure, but still it’s overly bloody for its own sake and simply never as thrilling or as engaging as its predecessor. Its standout horror moments aside, that unnecessary gore made it difficult to appreciate more.
2. Mamma Mia!
Mamma Mia! is a movie that is difficult to hate owing to its excessive charm, great ABBA music and beautiful locations, but its sequel proved especially well how the original is such a weak movie. The singing performances are frequently quite bad, the movie is way too frenetic in pace and the storyline is particularly sappy.
1. Mandy
Mandy takes the cake as the worst movie I’ve seen all month. I certainly did appreciate its intriguing visual look and the movie is definitely original in a way, but it’s so immensely shallow and simply put boring that it bored me to death and, although the action is solid, the film never gained enough momentum and was too weird for its own sake.
