Best and Worst Films from March 2018
Best Films from March 2018:
3. I, Tonya
When it comes to March, Molly’s Game was close to get on this list as that film is awesome, but eventually another woman’s picture I, Tonya edged it out. This film is superbly acted by Allison Janney and Margot Robbie who deliver two outstanding performances, but the film is also phenomenally scripted and edited with such fantastic dialogue as well as humor. It’s one biopic film that isn’t stale for once.
2. Black Panther
Black Panther is one of Marvel’s finest films without a doubt. It is a different kind of superhero film, one that relies on drama and politics more instead of action and spectacle and it’s all the better for it. Its characters are all superb including Killmonger who’s Marvel’s best villain yet. The conflict at the center of the film is important and timely whereas its message is wonderful. It is a film that has a lot to say while consistently being fun as well.
1. Annihilation
Annihilation is another future sci-fi classic in a decade full of them. ‘Ex Machina’ was such an admirable debut for Alex Garland, but here he delivers once more, this time in a sci-fi horror genre hybrid with such creepy thrills as well as a thematically rich scientific and psychological storyline. Its influences are obvious, but the execution is the original mix of those influences and the ending truly is fascinating in its open nature. It is thus the very best film I’ve seen this month.
Worst Films from March 2018:
3. All the Money in the World
I expected a problematic movie from All the Money in the World and that’s exactly what I got. Yes, its acting is very good but admittedly Michelle Williams is more memorable than Christopher Plummer. The story is great on paper, but weak in execution owing to Ridley Scott’s subpar directing, weak editing and a refusal to tackle its interesting themes properly.
2. Ferdinand
Ferdinand is one of those kids’ flicks which only a child can love. As an adult, it bored me to death with its excessive action and an over-reliance on stupid humor and typical sidekicks. There is nothing even remotely memorable or deep here and thus it pales in comparison to Disney’s 1938 classic.
1. Phantom Thread
I do realize that I am in minority when it comes to Phantom Thread and the overall filmography of Paul Thomas Anderson, but I just do not get or like his films and this is another one that failed to appeal to me. Yes, Vicky Krieps’ performance is excellent and the film looks good, but it has nothing to say at all, it is very boring at first and then it becomes ridiculous in its silly twist. The film tries to impress so hard, but it ended up being a total failure for me and the worst film I’ve seen all month and the worst movie of 2017 in my opinion.
