Best and Worst Films from June 2021
Best Films from June 2021:
3. A Quiet Place Part II
‘Starship Troopers’ and ‘Munich’ almost landed on my best of June list, but eventually I went with this sequel because it signaled a glorious return to cinemas where I saw it. Though the originality of the first movie was lost this time around and we get very little answers overall, the simple qualities of its thriller elements, fantastic performances and excellent characterization still remained intact. The opening is one of the best in blockbuster history.
2. Sauvage
Sauvage is this French movie about prostitution that is very difficult to watch, but it offers an important look into this unforgiving profession. It’s very graphic for sure, but thus highly realistic too. Beautifully acted and emotionally effective, the film is at its best in the ambiguous ending thematically speaking. The main character’s vulnerability is touching.
1. Undertow
The best film I watched all month came in on the very last night of June, and that is another gay film, but much better than the above one. Undertow is a Peruvian fantasy drama that is so unique in its magical twist, but never forsaking the true drama at its core. The acting and cinematography are superb, but it is the poetic quality to the film and its main theme that is the real winner. It’s unlike any other romance out there.
Worst Films from June 2021:
3. Fast Times at Ridgemont High
I really did not care for this coming-of-age comedy from the eighties. It was funny in the Sean Penn character, but otherwise utterly simplistic, thematically empty and very dated in some of the sex scenes. It did not stand the test of time at all.
2. Wish Dragon
Wish Dragon is a total rip-off of Disney’s ‘Aladdin’. Surely, the characters are well developed, the animation is nice and some scenes are charming, but the movie seemed overly unoriginal and just pointless in recreating the same old story and style of humor all over again.
1. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
The fifth Star Trek movie is the worst of the OS films for sure. I did like the dynamic between Kirk, Spock and McCoy as the three are lovely together, but the plot is a mess and Shatner’s directing is just as bad as his acting unfortunately.
