Best Films from June 2020:

3. The Blood of a Poet

The Blood of a Poet is one of the best French films of the thirties, that goes without saying. Yes, the film is not as great in all of its segments, but it’s highly impressive when it comes to its stunning black-and-white cinematography, amazing sets and a crazy, offbeat vice to its stories. It’s an artistic movie that represents the avant-garde so well.

2. Tomboy

When it comes to LGBT movies, you can’t go better than with Celine Sciamma whose works are truly magnificent. Tomboy is a story about a lesbian girl/a trans boy that, yes, is very ambiguous in its story, but that only cemented its status as a very different, sophisticated movie that treats sexual orientation and gender identity in a decidedly complex, messy manner as it is in real life.

1. Downfall

The best movie I watched was on the last night of June and that was Downfall, an absolute classic of German cinema and one of the best World War II dramas that I have ever seen. The film deals with the last days of Hitler and his subordinates, and it’s all about recreating the chaos and suspense that was happening those couple of days. The characterization, acting and especially pacing are all top-notch. It flies by how riveting it is.

3. The Color of Money

I really did not care for The Hustler, and the same goes for its sequel. The movie is not bad as it’s well acted and well developed in its characters, but the screenplay is very weak and the movie is never cinematic or engaging enough. It’s a rare Scorsese misfire.

2. The Brand New Testament

I found this Belgian movie way too silly personally. Yes, I respected its different, authentic plot and vibe, but I also strongly disliked some overly sexualized, ridiculous plot points. It’s also repetitive in its structure and simply too strange for its own sake.

1. Bad News Bears

And the worst film from this month has to be Richard Linklater’s remake of an already weak sports flick from the seventies. He just did everything the same, which made for a pointless remake in the vein of ‘The Lion King’. It’s well acted, but that’s pretty much it in this instance.
