Best and Worst Films from February 2025
Best Films from February 2025:
3. Nosferatu
I watched three great movies during this month and all three naturally got on this list. The first is this Robert Eggers gem. He’s one of my favorite contemporary directors and he did not disappoint here as well. This version of this often adapted tale is not only visually striking, but also genuinely creepy at times. The highlight is the overall production design technically speaking, but in terms of storytelling the different, daring ending takes the cake as the best thing that Eggers did to modernize this story.
2. Hundreds of Beavers
Hundreds of Beavers is this antique-looking and sounding movie that is devoid of dialogue and filmed in black-and-white. It’s a comedy done in the style of early 20s slapstick movies. Most of the humor really worked, the characters were a delight and the overall production was meticulously crafted and gorgeous to behold. The third act is elaborate to an extreme and just brilliant, making this a timeless movie and one of the best of 2024.
1. Gods and Monsters
I am not the biggest fan of biopics, but Gods and Monsters is a rare exception as a film that transcends the limitations of that genre through a very unconventional structure, strong themes and phenomenal acting performances across the board. Brendan Fraser was excellent and perfectly cast, Lynn Redgrave stole the show in a smaller, but very impactful role, and Ian McKellen delivered his career-best turn in such a layered, well written role. This is an exceptional film that is so well directed, edited and paced while featuring a potent mix of witty dialogue and lightweight tone with a more serious and touching scenes toward the end. It’s one of my favorite biopics for sure.
Worst Films from February 2025:
3. September 5
September 5 is a well made movie that still did not need to exist, especially not in today’s climate. It also felt needless to depict all of the minute details from the journalists’ perspective and it certainly felt inferior when compared to Spielberg’s much superior ‘Munich’. It’s a very well made and reasonably short movie that is intense and overall quite solid, but it gets on this list for being so forgettable and unnecessary.
2. Moana 2
Speaking of unnecessary, we did not need the second Moana movie at all. The animation is inferior, the soundtrack is weak sauce and the supporting characters here were so uninteresting. It has some slid adventurous elements, but for the most part it was just going through he motions unfortunately.
1. A Complete Unknown
The worst movie I saw all month is this frustrating biopic. The bulk of this movie is just Bob Dylan singing and everybody else swooning over him and that’s pretty much it. We do not get to learn anything about him or the people that he was surrounded with. Timothee Chalamet is undoubtedly a great actor, but this is by far his worst performance to date and it’s not his fault as he was given nothing to work with. I am getting sick and tired of these music biopics that are just made to garner awards and to boost the egos of the musicians depicted. It’s one of the worst movies of the year.
