Best Films from February 2021:
3. Dear Comrades!
Dear Comrades! is the best foreign movie I saw this month. The black-and-white cinematography is gorgeous and strikingly artistic, the acting is fantastic and the film is very dark and emotional, especially in the third act. It depicts a lesser-known event in Russian history with a very anti-communist stance while emphasizing just how brutal this country’ past could become.
2. Malcolm & Marie
I know that many people do not appreciate this one, but I personally loved it. It’s one of those talkative films that I just adore. The movie transcended its stagy roots thanks to stunning cinematography. Zendaya steals the show with a truly phenomenal breakout performance. The emotional intensity is definitely felt and the dialogue is very well written. It’s a well constructed movie about a very toxic couple falling apart.
1. The White Tiger
The White Tiger was easily the best movie that I watched in February. It’s one of the best Netflix movies so far and one of the most underrated. It depicts the horrible unfairness of India’s caste system and just how frustrating living in this country can be to the less fortunate. The acting performances are uniformly amazing while the film’s tone is very brave. The first half is pretty much a fun comedy with great humor whereas the second one is a moving and serious dark crime flick. All of it worked in spades.
Worst Films from February 2021:
3. Dick Johnson Is Dead
I really did not care for this documentary. Lauded by many as one of the best documentaries of the year, to me it was one of the worst. The artistic merits notwithstanding, the director filming her father before his death and while he is seriously ill was very morally questionable to me.
2. Tom and Jerry
Tom and Jerry is a terrible movie. None of it worked for me with the exception of the style, which was itself fine. The ending was all wrong and overly positive, the human characters are garbage and those pigeons are just horrendous. The worst offender is the atrocious rap soundtrack that personally infuriated me.
1. I Care a Lot
Take Rosamund Pike, Peter Dinklage and Dianne Wiest. You’ve got a good movie, right? Wrong! This is a piece of trash film that these great actors did not deserve to be in. The script is one of the worst that I have ever witnessed, none of it made sense, the plot holes abounded throughout and putting the message in the third act to make it “legit” left a sour taste in my mouth. Wow, was this movie horrible.
