Best and Worst Films from August 2021

Best Films from August 2021:

3. Star Trek: First Contact

First Contact is undoubtedly one of the best, perhaps even the very best among the Star Trek movies. It has its issues, but most elements clicked into its place here as the characters worked and the storyline is surprisingly intricate and very well crafted. Thus, it rightfully gets the third spot for this month.

2. Quo Vadis

Yes, this epic movie isn’t all that epic due to extensive dialogue, but that dialogue is amazing and the performances are mostly outstanding, some getting deserved Oscar nominations. Quo Vadis is long, but it’s mostly surprisingly engaging for its staggering length and it looks splendid in costumes, sets and imagery.

1. Ghost World

Ghost World was the best movie from my anniversary marathon that I did this August. Yes, it’s overly strange at first, but eventually I’d come to fully appreciate its amazingly developed and relatable central character and an offbeat, quirky tone to it. It’s a different kind of coming-of-age movie and that authenticity is to be admired.

3. Annette

Unlike the best list, the worst list this month was difficult to put together as unfortunately I ended up seeing quite a lot of stinkers this time around. ‘El Topo’ could have easily landed this spot, but eventually I had to give it to Annette for being so damn annoying in its overly depressing tone, one-note plot and cringe-worthy execution.

2. Straw Dogs

Straw Dogs was even worse. This movie honestly infuriated me for its immense sexism toward both genders. I hated what the movie had to say about both men and women and it’s just another seventies exercise in violence and rape with no meaningful commentary anywhere to be found.

1. Rushmore

Rushmore of course takes the first spot this month as this is another Wes Anderson flick that I just despised. I hated its off-putting characters and I found not just the plot, but the humor horrible as well. I will never get this director and I hated almost all of his movies so far.
