Best and Worst Films from April 2022
Best Films from April 2022:
3. Deconstructing Harry
Ti West’s ‘X’ almost made it onto this list, but I could just not leave this one out of it. Deconstructing Harry represents everything that is great about Woody Allen – his self-aware, self-hating, honest humor that really appeals to me. This flick is chaotic, but very funny throughout and also highly observational. It serves as this almost autobiographical take on his own life. I am so glad that I watched it on the big screen this month.
2. Citizen X
Citizen X is this hugely underrated movie that is underseen because it’s a television flick. But it needs more attention due to the highly professional execution across the board – the directing, editing, acting and screenwriting are all excellent here. Donald Sutherland has never been better than he was in this highly amusing role. This story elevates the serial killer genre trappings thanks to its thematic resonance. It tragicomically depicts Soviet era’s terribly constricting influence on the police force.
1. Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!
The best movie I watched in April is this twisted, crazy Pedro Almodovar outing that also ranks among his best and most underrated works. Yes, the film might be sexist to modern viewers, but to me it was just honest in its complex psychosexual dynamic at the core of the story. The acting is fantastic while the movie is truly sexy and sensual, something that you almost never see in US films. It’s just a fun ride and an effortless mixture of comedy, romance and thriller genres that really worked despite the many odds put against it.
Worst Films from April 2022:
3. No Way Out
I did not care for this 1987 thriller, which is why it ended up on the worst list for this month. No Way Out is well acted and intense at times, but the whole twist in the third act made no sense in the context of the story. It is dated in a lot of its thematic elements as well.
2. The Day After Tomorrow
Roland Emmerich’s The Day After Tomorrow features stunning VFX and it’s highly entertaining to watch, but obviously the scientific inaccuracies made it hilarious to witness. The human drama in the second half was also terrible, making the movie rather mediocre overall.
1. Raising Arizona
Yes, I had to put a Coen Brothers movie on top of the worst list as Raising Arizona is just so annoying in its unfunny, over-the-top, one-note humor that simply never appealed to me in the slightest. It is also style over substance as the story is nowhere to be found.
