Axe Me Another (1934)
Axe Me Another Review
Axe Me Another is a 1934 animated short film from the Popeye the Sailor series that is such a great flick and easily the best so far.
Popeye saves Olive whom Bluto threw into the river and then the two square off by comparing their strength on the surrounding trees. This is such a great Popeye film that is uneven in pacing and could have been a bit funnier, but is otherwise outstanding because it incorporates everything I love about Popeye – his signature humor, great action and all of the major characters are here. It starts off really well and ends in a great way, but it is the middle in which the film shines.
Popeye is phenomenal here and I liked how talkative he is and always amusing. Bluto is great as well and Olive is expectedly fantastic. The action is the standout aspect in Axe Me Another because it is so incredibly entertaining and so innovative which is a quality that we’ve come to expect from this series. The highlights are those scenes in which Popeye punches and chops trees as they are so inventive and unforgettable. It is filled with action, but the action that is executed flawlessly. It is undoubtedly one of the very best Popeye flicks of the time.
Axe Me Another is the finest Popeye flick yet with flawless and innovative action, excellent humor and a superb use of its characters and setting.
