Assassin’s Creed: Embers Review

Assassin’s Creed: Embers is a 2011 animated short film created by Ubisoft. It’s such a good flick.

This movie functions as a companion piece to the AC franchise and it should be viewed after ‘Revelations’ as it caps off Ezio’s story beautifully. He lives with his family in a village, but when a Chinese female assassin arrives, she brings danger and old memories of his work to the now retired assassin. He helps her out, but also bids farewell to his family and effectively the audience in that very moving final sequence.

Yes, this is a very sad, but fittingly elegant and inspired farewell to the character of Ezio Auditore. We get to see his admirable resolve even in his last moments and especially his love for people and life in general. The plot hole that he was left alone for the most part in this village notwithstanding, the overall storyline worked and was quite touching. The voice acting was reliably superb and Ezio got to say some very inspiring lines here.

The animation is only medium. I found the color palette too washed out and the movements rather stiff, but at least the settings are well brought to life and the characters looked faithful to the games. The score and sound are quite good themselves. The movie is worth seeing for the fans of the franchise and it’s a nice little treat from Ubisoft.

Assassin’s Creed: Embers is a very emotional story that honors and says goodbye to Ezio in such an elegant way. It has its flaws, but this short film mostly managed to satisfy fans.

My Rating – 4.2
