Arts and Flowers Review

Arts and Flowers Review

Arts and Flowers is a 1956 animated short film from the Woody Woodpecker series. It is a pretty strong short.

Woody and the artist wage a battle all over the desert regarding who is to paint the only desert flower in the area. They seek to gain a monetary award for it. The artist in question is aptly named Art and he is designed as this ugly, scrawny man. He was very memorable and one of the better antagonists to the protagonist in quite a while. I loved the dynamic between the two.

The highlights include that ending where Woody is tricked and still triumphant and of course the painted oasis gag that symbolized cartoon logic in the best way possible. The animation is stellar here and the score is also pretty good. This type of movie needed more energy in its execution and more of those memorable gags, especially in the weaker first half. But the second half is superb for sure.

Arts and Flowers has strong animation, a couple of excellent gags and a memorable antagonist, leading to one of the better entries in the series.

My Rating – 4
