Alice Helps the Romance is a 1926 animated short film from the Alice Comedies series. It’s a very dark short.

Julius the Cat tries to woo a girl but fails, so he gets the help of Alice. This is a very odd short that is quite long, but not funny at all. It lacked the fun gags to make it more entertaining. It included Alice, but only toward the end. The animation is quite good, though hardly great.

The main differentiation between this flick and others in the series lies in its dark tone. The movie has a scene where Julius wants to kill himself and that was quite a disturbing moment for such an early cartoon. Julius got such a solid character arc in this weird movie that ultimately mostly worked.

Alice Helps the Romance is an odd Alice Comedies short that has its issues, but its strangeness and darkness made it unique.
